People
From the Potawatomi who first inhabited Hillsdale county to the white people encouraged by the U.S. government to settle in their area, the history of Hillsdale County is the history of its people.
Places
With the completion of the Erie Canal in 1825, an easier journey to Michigan Territory became possible. White settlers moved to the "west," and Hillsdale County was established.
