Baseball was an extremely popular sport in the early days, whether formerly organized or on the spur of the moment. Ball diamonds were common throughout the county, whether at the Fairgrounds infield or at lake recreational areas such as Hemlock Lake.

From the names shown of the ball players below, this appears to be a group of Hillsdale businessmen dressed in special regalia for a ball game. Site unknown.

The sign warns: “Beware, Do Not Stir up the Umpire while in his Cage.”
